Cesspool vs Septic System: What's the Difference?

How a Cesspool Works
A cesspool is a single underground chamber, often lined with concrete or block, that collects wastewater and lets the liquid slowly seep into the surrounding soil. Solids settle at the bottom and need to be pumped out periodically. Cesspools are common in many older Long Island homes.
How a Septic System Works
A septic system is a bit more involved. Wastewater first enters a septic tank where solids separate from liquid, then the liquid flows out to a drain field where it filters through the soil. This two stage process treats wastewater more thoroughly than a basic cesspool.
